Questions

What fees come with a registered agent?

Two kinds. The state charges a fee to file a change of agent (10 states charge nothing; the highest is $100). The agent charges its own yearly fee, which is $149 with Mainstay Filing, our best overall pick, and the same at renewal.

Is there a fee to be my own registered agent?

The state does not charge for serving as your own agent, but you must meet the state’s address and availability rules, and naming yourself still happens on the formation or change form.

Are there setup fees?

Mainstay Filing charges none beyond the yearly price. Some providers mention setup fees or extras on their pages; see the provider fee schedule for what each page states.

Does the state charge to change agents?

40 states do. Fees run from $5 to $100; the median state charges $15.

What if I stop paying my agent?

The state can treat the company as having no agent. Change agents with the state before cancelling the old one, so the record is never empty.
